Generic properties of evolutionary games and adaptationism∗

چکیده

Adaptationism maintains that natural selection is the principal factor causing evolutionary change. This statement is in need of qualification. Indeed, Peter Godfrey-Smith finds several possible usages of the term adaptationism. Steven Orzack and Elliott Sober argue that for adaptationism to be an interesting research program it has to be given in a reasonably strong form. Such a reasonably strong version describes adaptationism as committed to the claim that any factor other than natural selection can nearly always be ignored in the explanation of why a certain trait is found in a population. Thus, adaptationism allows one to ignore the role of non-selective factors such as mutation, drift, recombination, or epigenetic processes. Evolutionary game theory as set forth by John Maynard Smith is often associated with adaptationism. Evolutionary games are considered as nothing but ∗I am grateful to Brian Skyrms, Rory Smead, Elliott Sober, and Kevin Zollman for helpful comments.

Evolutionary Psychology, Adaptation and Design

I argue that Evolutionary Psychologists’ notion of adaptationism is closest to what Peter Godfrey-Smith (2001) calls explanatory adaptationism and as a result, is not a good organizing principle for research in the biology of human behavior. I also argue that adopting an alternate notion of adaptationism presents much more explanatory resources to the biology of human behavior. I proceed by int...

Constraints and Spandrels in Gould’s Structure of Evolutionary Theory

Gould’s Structure of Evolutionary Theory argues that Darwinism has undergone significant revision. Although Gould succeeds in showing that hierarchical approaches have expanded Darwinism, his critique of adaptationism is less successful. Gould claims that the ubiquity of developmental constraints and spandrels has forced biologists to soften their commitment to adaptationism. I argue that Gould...

A philosophical evaluation of adaptationism as a heuristic strategy.

Adaptationism has prompted many a debate in philosophy of biology but the focus is usually on empirical and explanatory issues rather than methodological adaptationism (MA). Likewise, the context of evolutionary biology has provided the grounding for most discussions of the heuristic role of adaptationism. This paper extends the debate by drawing on case studies from physiology and systems biol...

Biological Levers and Extended Adaptationism

Two critiques of simple adaptationism are distinguished: anti-adaptationism and extended adaptationism. Adaptationists and anti-adaptationists share the presumption that an evolutionary explanation should identify the dominant simple cause of the evolutionary outcome to be explained. A consideration of extended-adaptationist models such as coevolution, niche construction and extended phenotypes...
